Statement on MA Pay Equity Law
Boston Women in Media and Entertainment (BWME) is proud to be a vocal supporter of the Massachusetts Pay Equity Law signed by Governor Charlie Baker in August of 2017 and taking effect on July 1, 2018. We are cautiously optimistic that the law will make a positive impact on explicit gender discrimination.
Realizing that substantial pay differentials have existed between males and females in our industry, Massachusetts is the first state in the country which makes it unlawful for an employer to ask about a job applicant’s salary history before making the job offer. Although work remains to be done to ensure that employers cannot discriminate on the basis of gender for comparable work, BWME toasts our lawmakers and Governor Baker for leading the country by embracing this long-overdue change.
