Charlie Albright

July 21 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

$45 – $70

Charlie Albright is hailed as “among the most gifted musicians of his generation” with a “dazzling natural keyboard affinity” by the Washington Post, and has been praised for his “jaw-dropping technique and virtuosity meshed with a distinctive musicality” by The New York Times.

Recipient of the prestigious 2014 Avery Fisher Career Grant and 2010 Gilmore Young Artist Award, Albright won the 2014 Ruhr Klavier Festival Young Artist Award presented by Marc-André Hamelin (Germany) and the 2009 Young Concert Artists International Auditions.

Delighting audiences with his youth and virtuosic mastery of the keyboard, Charlie Albright opens this solo concert with two selections from Schubert’s Impromptus Op. 90; No. 3 in Gb Major, which is lyrical and gentle, its primary theme delicately muted; No. 2 in Eb Major begins with a cascading melody, bright and cheerful, that develops into an energetic and rhythmic exploration of the opening theme. Strauss’ Concert Arabesque follows, a familiar and joy-filled romantic waltz that never fails to delight audiences with its exuberance. Kapustin’s Variations Op. 41 is a jazz-influenced study that explores the range of piano technique with an expansive exposition.

The first half of the concert concludes with Improvisation, an Albright specialty in which he solicits a few notes from the audience and creates an immediate, improvised piece. The possibilities are endless and his delivery is awe-inspiring.

Mussorgsky’s masterpiece, Pictures at an Exhibition, is a suite of ten pieces for piano inspired by the composer’s visit to an art exhibition, each movement musically describing Mussorgsky’s interpretation of the art. A work of genius demanding virtuoso abilities, Pictures at an Exhibition celebrates music and art in equal measure.

Charlie Albright is an artist you will never forget and the Festival is thrilled he is appearing during the milestone 50th Anniversary Season!
